This winter, the George Gardner Scholarship Fund has been happy to help Ouray County youth learn about winter adventures through two sponsored programs…
Ouray Student Learns Backcountry Skills in an Avalanche Course
Ouray student Henry Furstenfeld asked GGSF to help him take an AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Course, through the local Peak Mountain Guides. The course was great fun and Henry learned how to make good decisions about where to travel to avoid avalanche danger in his own backyard mountains.
Thank you again for the scholarship and the amazing opportunity to be able to take this class. I am inspired more than ever to pursue a deeper knowledge of the great outdoors. How lucky I am to call this place home.
Thanks again for sponsoring me through this program. My instructor, Josh, was awesome, and owner Matt Wade couldn’t have been nicer. Both were extremely knowledgeable in their field and went out of their way to make me feel comfortable and confident to take this course…even though I was the youngest student there.
There are still several avalanche courses being offered this winter through the local avalanche schools and guide services (through March), so if you know of a student who would benefit from this education and could use GGSF support, please reach out to our Administrator Danika Gilbert or a GGSF Board Member.
Ridgway 9th Grade Students Learn to Ice Climb
After a delayed start due to a crazy winter storm, the Ridgway
9th grade students had two Wednesdays learning to ice climb at the Ouray Ice Park.
Students had a great time, and the guides, volunteers and teacher chaperones were very impressed with the students – both in the determination and enthusiasm, but also their cooperation and encouragement of each other.
Sadly, the 3rd week of the program was cancelled with the early Ice Park closure. Even students who before the program started were sure they weren’t going to like ice climbing were disappointed – they all had so much fun!
for working with the Ridgway School to make this program happen!
And THANK YOU to all of you who have donated to GGSF to help us support these programs. Without you, we couldn’t support these great programs!
